Herringer to join U of R Cougars

Kelowna Rockets goaltender Michael Herringer has committed to the University of Regina Cougars for the upcoming 2017-2018 regular season.

“The University of Regina is a smaller school with smaller class sizes so that was appealing for me,” explained Herringer. “Being a small town kid, some of the big schools seemed a bit overwhelming. Their coach Todd Johnson is a very energetic and enthusiastic guy and he wanted me more than other schools. Being pursued like that made me want to go there over other schools that just sent out generic letters of interest.”

The 1996 born goaltender just completed his third and final season with the Rockets. After originally being drafted in the ninth round of the WHL Bantam draft by the Victoria Royals and playing only two games, Herringer was acquired via trade and played in 113 games with Kelowna. He finished his WHL career with a record of  71-29-5-0. He also played in 39 playoff games with the Rockets, posting a record of 21-17. He was part of the WHL Championship-winning Rockets team in 2015 as well.

“The Rockets helped me a lot. You come to Kelowna as a boy and you leave as a man. They focus a lot on maturing, commitment, leadership, time management, work ethic, and being a good citizen,” told Herringer. “All things that will only help me in Regina.”

When asked if the WHL Scholarship made his decision to go to post secondary any easier, Herringer said it definitely had an influence.

“It’s huge. Not having to worry about the financial aspect of school was big for my family and I. School can be overwhelming as it is with it being a new experience with a packed schedule. Having that looked after by the WHL definitely played a huge role in why I chose to go to school,” said Herringer.

“Herry” will be taking Kinesiology and Human Kinetics at the U of R.
